The political party that constantly claims it is “saving America” has, in just the last few days, violated at least five of the first ten amendments of the Constitution. That’s half of them. What are the odds they manage to violate the other half pretty quickly? The most recent example is the arrest of Don Lemon. Arresting a journalist because you don’t like what they report or who they criticize is a direct violation of freedom of the press. That is the First Amendment, plain and simple. You don’t get to silence reporters, intimidate them, or punish them for doing their job and then turn around and claim you support the Constitution. If Don Lemon can be arrested for doing his job, then no member of the press is safe. Freedom of the press doesn’t just apply to journalists you agree with. It exists specifically to protect voices you don’t like, because once the government decides who is and isn’t “legitimate,” the First Amendment is already gone. They’ve also challenged the Second Amendment by acting like only certain people are allowed to bear arms. As I mentioned a few days ago the right to bear arms is either a right or it isn’t. You don’t get to decide it only applies to people who share your politics or show loyalty to the right side. They’ve violated the Fourth Amendment by unreasonably stopping and questioning people about their papers or their citizenship simply because of the way they look. That’s not law enforcement. That’s profiling. And they violate the Sixth Amendment when they deny someone the right to a fair trial and instead decide to act as judge, jury, and executioner. That, in turn, violates the Eighth Amendment, because executing someone on the spot is the very definition of cruel and unusual punishment. That is not law and order. That is not justice. You cannot claim to be defending America while openly ignoring the Constitution whenever it becomes inconvenient.
