Xavier Smith muffed a punt that caused a turnover in the NFC Championship for the Rams. It was his second muff of the game, but the first that resulted in a turnover. I love the Rams, but sometimes fans lose sight of the human element of sports. These players are human, not robots. Human error is a part of sporting events. The amount of hate we see directed at athletes when they make a mistake is unreal. I know Smith never wanted to cause a turnover, but sometimes fans act like they want to win games more than the players themselves want to win games. This reminded me of years ago when Kyle Williams turned the ball over in overtime for the 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Williams received death threats over a football play. As much as I love the sport of football, at the end of the day it is just a game. Some fans need to put things into a little better perspective. I am not saying Xavier Smith has received death threats, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he has or eventually will. Fans will often blame their gambling losses for their anger. If you have a gambling problem and can’t handle losses, then maybe you need to look at yourself in the mirror. As fans, we need to be better than this. Football, and all sports, are played by humans, and it’s about time fans started acting a little more human themselves.
