ICE is not new

January 29, 2026

People think that if you disagree with the way ICE is operating, it means you are okay with people being in the country illegally. That is far from the truth. I can disagree with how ICE is treating people, including how they are treating U.S. citizens, and believe they have failed to show basic human decency under the current administration. ICE has been around for a long time. The right always likes to point out that Obama deported more people than any other president, which is true, and ICE existed when he was president as well. Some of the same people who currently hold positions in ICE held positions then too, like Tom Homan. But you didn’t hear the same complaints you do under this administration because things were done more efficiently. You cannot argue that they deported the most people and then say they didn’t do it efficiently. The difference is that they did not raid schools or churches, and they did not hassle U.S. citizens. They didn’t rely on racial profiling or question anyone who didn’t “look American enough,” which is a big part of what is going on with the current administration. ICE should be doing its job, and it has done its job for many years. They just need to go back to doing it with proper morals and humanity. ICE isn’t the problem, the people in charge above them are.
